Eye Care on The Go

One of the greatest necessities for road safety is, undeniably, good vision. In fact, safe driving requires a combination of a number of different visual abilities including the ability to see both near and far ahead, peripheral vision, seeing at night and color vision, to name a few.

Strong distance vision is highly necessary because of how it lets you evaluate the stretch of road ahead and detect any risks that might appear. This gives you the opportunity to respond quickly and avoid an accident from happening. Alternatively, if you struggle with distance vision then there's a chance you may not see the hazards soon enough.

Equally as important is peripheral or side vision, which enables you see the sides of your car, which is crucial to spot pedestrians, animals and cross traffic without having to look away from the road lying ahead. Being able to see peripherally is also important for changing lanes and turning. Make sure you know how to use both your rearview and side mirrors. Check they're well-positioned, to enhance your view of the road to your sides and back.

Additionally, good depth perception is important for road safety. It allows you to measure distances correctly in dense driving conditions, switch lanes and pass other vehicles on the road. Good depth perception calls for proper vision in both of your eyes. If you've lost visual acuity in one eye, it's essential to check with your eye doctor to see if it is okay for you to drive. It may be suggested that you refrain from driving until your vision is corrected to achieve proper depth perception.

Accommodation also keeps you in good stead while on the road. Accommodating is the capability to shift your focus from something ahead to something close, like from the distance ahead of you to the speedometer. If you've recently hit middle-age it's common for you to have a slight challenge with near vision, and it might be helpful for you to get glasses or some other vision correction solution to help you see your dashboard. Speak to your optometrist to discuss the best option.

Try not to hold off until you renew or apply for your driver's license to have an eye exam. You never want to endanger your life or the lives of others on the road! If you think your eyesight isn't up to par, visit your optometrist, and have a thorough eye exam sooner rather than later.
